Can your homeowners insurance policy be cancelled if you get a big dog?

Autumn Cat asked:

I know someone who had a homeowners insurance policy that was cancelled because of a big dog that her friend gave her. Is that allowed?

yes, it’s allowed. It has nothing to do with the size of the dog, but rather the breed. Certain homeowners policies will not insure homes with certain breeds of dogs; usually dogs like pit bulls, rottweilers, and dobermans.

Yes. It’s called “increase in hazard”, and that reason should have been listed on the cancellation notice.

Yep, depending on the breed it is a liability risk to have a large or vicious animal
